Description
What this test shows
This test measures cortisol levels on waking and then throughout the day, providing an insight into the patient’s ability to cope with anticipated challenges and their resilience to stress. An imbalance in these adrenal/stress hormones reflect an imbalance in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis). The challenges of daily life, chronic pain, blood sugar dysregulation, work stressors, and poor relationship are just a few things which can alter the HPA axis. Additionally the test measures secretory IgA, an immunoglobulin which is an important indicator of digestive immune function. Low sIgA levels are associated with recurrent infections, food intolerances and autism spectrum disorders.
Who this test is for
Imbalances in adrenal hormones/HPA axis can have wide ranging negative consequences which adversely impact on quality of life. Symptoms of HPA axis dysfunction can be vague and highly variable, but may include fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, depression, gut issues, and chronic pain. Other conditions associated with HPA axis dysfunction include cognitive decline, diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disease. The test may also be helpful to those who have had chronic intestinal infections (caused by bacteria, yeasts or parasites), food sensitivities, exposure to stress, antiobiotics or other medications, all of which can cause low levels of sIgA.
