These common illnesses and conditions are just a few things that can happen if we are exposed to stress, trauma, medications, parasites, or if we have genetic, structural or functional disorders. Eating foods which are not necessarily right for us can also be a cause or driver of many conditions. Equally, food can play a powerful role in restoring balance and harmony in the body – most people and most conditions and illnesses will respond to food, with the result that many health conditions can be reversed or improved.
The powerful role of food
Food is not just about satisfying hunger and giving us fuel, its about triggering and enabling a cascade of physiological, psychological and sensory effects in the body. Food provides the raw ingredients for methylation, a critical and complex process of biochemical reactions, the means by which we generate our energy, regulate our hormones, support our immune and mental health, and drive most other processes in the body. Genetic variations, low nutrient intake, digestion and absorption issues, and functional disorders can all interfere with the methylation process, causing us to feel unwell and experience some of the conditions and symptoms listed above.
The importance of bespoke nutrition
There is a continuous stream of confusing and conflicting information about which dietary protocol to follow, with many diets being based on some form of food restriction or elimination. However, we are bioindividual with our own personal nutritional needs, and excluding certain foods can be damaging if not done with guidance. It is important to remember that a diet balanced in carbs, proteins, and fats will deliver a critical supply of essential vitamins and minerals, with fibre also playing a crucial role.
Bespoke nutrition is about eating an abundance and variation of foods which are right for you, and it plays a powerful role in restoring balance if you have a diagnosed condition or health concern, or if you have medically unexplained symptoms. Learning which foods are right for you will also support vitality, energy and longevity, and can help prevent illness in later life. Bespoke nutrition can also support you in reducing your medications, or coming off them altogether, a valuable tool if you are suffering known or unknown side effects.
We must also respect that our bodies change depending on our life stage, environment, stress levels, job demands or whether we have any known or unknown imbalance or disease; we must respond to these factors and make appropriate dietary changes which will support us at that particular time in our life.
The role of testing alongside bespoke nutrition
While we can use foods to restore balance, testing gives us a much deeper understanding of what may be going on in the body, providing a powerful tool for helping to quickly identify imbalances and disease. The Your Health Tests page sets out the benefits of carrying out your own tests.
Gene expression is influenced by what we eat– food can switch genes on and off. So while genetic testing may reveal that you are predisposed to a particular health condition, you will not necessarily succumb to that condition if you respond to that information with dietary changes.
